They had guesses before that this was an island: clambering among the pink rocks, with the sea on either side, and the crystal heights of air, they had known by some instinct that the sea lay on every side. It was roughly boat-shaped2; on either side rocks, cliffs, tree-tops, and a steep slope; forward there the jungle flat of the island3, dense green, but drawn at the end to a pink tail4. There, where the island was barely seen in the water, was another island; a rock, almost detached, standing like a fort, facing the boys across the green with one bold, pink bastion5.

Ralph turned to the others:

"This belongs to us."

The boys surveyed all this, then looked out to sea. "That's a reef. A coral reef. I've seen pictures like that," Ralph said.

The reef enclosed more than one side of the island, lying perhaps a mile out and parallel to the beach. "There's no village smoke, and no boats," said Ralph wisely. "We'll make sure later; but I think it's uninhabited."

They scrambled down a rock slope, dropped among flowers and made their way under the trees. Here they paused and examined the bushes round them curiously.

Once, when the family was moving from one town to the other, they had lived in a cottage on the edge of the moors. Of the succession of houses2 that Ralph had known, this one stood out with particular clarity because after that house he had been sent away to school. Mother had still been with them and Father had come home every day. Wild ponies came to the stone wall at the bottom of the garden, and it had snowed. Just behind the cottage there was a shed and you could lie up there, watching the flakes swirl past. You could see the damp spot where each flake died; then you could mark the first flake that lay down without melting and watch the whole ground turn white. You could go indoors when you were cold and look out of the window.

When you went to bed there was a bowl of corn flakes with sugar and cream. And the books - they stood on the shelf by the bed, learning together with always two or three laid flat on the top3 because he had not bothered to put them back properly... Everything was all right, everything was good-humored and friendly.

"That's a wonderful idea," said Helen. "I've never been to Sochi, and I love the sea. We'll bathe, we'll go boating and swimming. We'll lie in the sun on the beach."

“And we'll be able be attend the Festival of Song that takes place in Sochi every summer, we'll hear new songs and new music," said Michael. "Our trip may be very interesting. Here's what we'll do2. We'll take a plane to Odessa and I'll show you round the city. There beautiful monuments to the famous people, who lived in Odessa, museums and other places of interest."

"We may even go to the famous Opera House," Helen interrupted him.

"We'll never be able to get to Sochi, you known," Michael said. "Well, from Odessa, we'll go to Sochi by boat." "We'll have to book plane and boat tickets in advance, shan't we?" asked Helen. "We'll certainly have to do that," said Michael, "I've have to go to the Travel Agency and settle that tomorrow morning. By the way, I've got a guide to Sochi. Let's read what it says about the town."

Michael started reading, "Sochi is the largest and most beautiful resort4 in the Caucasus. The high Caucasian Mountains protect Sochi from the cold north winds. There are a lot of sunny days there. The sea water temperature is between 24-28°C in summer.

About two million people come to Sochi every year." "That'll do," Helen interrupted him. "I realize Sochi is the town we should go to."

The Pavlovs enjoyed the trip from Odessa to Sochi. The Black Sea was calm. They sat on deck in the lounge chairs and looked at the sea.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Washington, the capital of the United States, is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Colombia. The terms Washington and District of Colombia are practically synonymous.The federal district is a piece of land ten miles square; it is neither north nor south, and it does not belong to any other state, but to all the states. The District is named in honour of Columbus, the discoverer of America.

The capital owes a great deal to the nation's first President, George Washington. It was Washington who selected the side for the District and laid the cornerstone of the Capitol Building, where Congress meets. Washington is not the largest city in the United States, for it cannot be compared in size with cities like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Los Angeles, which have more than a million inhabitants.

In the political sense, however, it is the most important city in the United States.

The law-making center of the United States is the Capitol, with its great Hall of Representatives and Senate Chamber.

You can walk around to the back of the Capitol and look across Union Square, all the way down to the Washington Monument and beyond to the Lincoln Memorial.

Washington is today one of the world's most beautiful capitals, not only the center of the National Government, but also it has become a great cultural, educational and scientific center, with its museums, art galleries, libraries, institutions, parks and monumental buildings.
