Lemieux Essay, Research Paper
Dear Mr. Lemieux, 1-21-00
Hello, my name is Raul and I am currently a junior at Duquesne University. I also work
part time at a daycare center in Orib, which is a small town in Pittsburgh. I understand
that you must get thousands of letters each year, and I hope that you know how much I
appreciate that you are reading mine.
The main reason I am writing to you is to ask for your assistance. At the daycare I work
at, we have recently been touched by a young boy named Joseph. Joseph currently is
fighting cancer of the kidneys. We raised money for his family over the holidays and
they have continued to steal our hearts over the past month. We have kept in touch with
them and they are constantly sending gifts of thanks for our help.
A few of the teachers and workers are trying to plan the summer camp for summer 2000.
Because of our interactions with Joseph and his family, we are hoping to do something
for not only him and his family, but also cancer research. We would like to plan a
carnival at the very end of the summer, right before the children return to school. The
carnival will be run by our school-age children. With our assistance, they will do all the
decorating, planning, etc. They will also be able to run their own booths.
This is where you come in! We want to donate all the money that we get to cancer
research, preferably to Joseph and the Mario Lemieux Fund. To make this night
unforgettable to the children, staff members, and families, we would like to invite you to
be there. I know this letter isn?t very specific, and I understand that you are probably one
of the busiest people in Pittsburgh. I am just asking you to consider making an
appearance, even if it is for only 15 minutes. You are looked up to by many of the
children at our center. We want these children to see that individuals like you are not
only looked at as an incredible athlete, but also as someone who donates your time to
good causes.
In closing, I would just like to state that you are the only person I have written to, because
I think you are the one that would have the most impact on the children and the families
that attend. I hope that you will write back to me and let me know if you are interested in
making an appearance at our carnival. We are willing to work around your schedule as
much as possible. We are planning the carnival for the end of August, however, we can
change the date to accompany your busy schedule.
Once again, I thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Jay Sherman
