State Cross Country Meet
I can still remember the day I ran at the state Cross
Country Meet. It was one of the most exciting days of my
life. It took place in Round Rock, Texas during my
sophomore year in high school. I never forget that day; it is
a great experience for anyone to get to go through.
It was 11:45 a.m. as I was standing outside getting
ready for the big race. It was cold, wet, and gloomy
outside and sleeting out really hard. Getting closer to the
race, I decided that it was time for me to begin warming
up. I began to take my sweats off , and realized how cold it
really was. I started running while doing my exercises and
they blew the whistle that signalized it was time to start the
race. I set up in my position and waited for instructions.
The official told us that when he shot the gun , that would
signify , for us to begin the race. That is when my
emotions began to rush inside of me. I was scared ,
excited , and nervous all at the same time. All of a sudden
I heard loud “BBBAAANNNGGG” , and off we went.
I sprinted out like a rocket , because I knew that it
was a race to see who could get out in front first. As I was
running I slipped and fell into the mud on my hands. I got
back up and continued the race. There were only fifteen
girls in front of me which was good for the beginning of a
State Cross Country meet. I thought I was doing
exceptionally good until I came upon a huge hill. I didn’t
realize how slick it was until I fell on my butt and rolled
back down the hill.
I got back up and was nearing the end of the meet. I
could hardly breathe ,and was covered in mud not to
mention freezing. I saw the finish line and looked behind
me to see five other girls racing to win my spot . I used
everything I had left to take my spot I had proudly earned.
When I finally reached the finish line I collapsed and fell to
the ground. My coach ran to tend to me to see if I was O.K
. I took a deep breathe and asked him “what place did I
get”? He had said that I had gotten 74th place out of 500
competitors. I was so excited , yet so disappointed because
I was hoping to take home a metal.
As you can see, being allowed to experience in a State
Cross Country meet, is an opportunity of a life time. It
was a dream come true to me. Although it wasn’t such a
great day for a Cross Country meet , I still had the time of
my life. I also learned that if your ever going to run in any
kind of race, don’t forget your sweats, just in case it’s a
little cold.
